Coastal Walk & Beach Planner
Practical packing, decision tree (Putty vs Maitland Bay vs Coastal Walk), order-of-stops and “don’t get this
wrong” notes for a Sydney / Central Coast ↔ Bouddi day. From
bouddinationalpark.com.au — print this page or use Print → Save as PDF in
your browser. No email required.
Verify before you go. Track status, vehicle fees, fire bans, camping and closures change.
Always check
NSW National Parks — Bouddi
and
park alerts. This planner is independent and unofficial
— not NPWS. Park entry fees and official camping are never affiliated on the website.
How to use this sheet: tick packing and status items the night before; pick one primary
plan (section 2); print or save PDF; leave a reverse clock for the drive home. Full timelines live on the site’s
itinerary pages.
1. Before you leave home
Status & logistics
- NPWS Bouddi alerts checked this morning
- Coastal / Gosford forecast (not only Sydney CBD)
- Fire danger / RFS checked if relevant
- Vehicle entry payment plan (Park’nPay / machines / pass) — verify live fee
- Primary plan chosen: Putty · Maitland · Coastal section · one-way
- Car shuffle / pick-up confirmed if doing full Coastal Walk one-way
- Someone knows your section plan + return window
- Offline map / alert screenshots saved
Packing (day pack)
- Water 1–2 L+ per person (more in heat)
- Snacks / simple lunch
- Grip trail shoes (not fashion sneakers)
- Sun hat + SPF50 (heath is exposed)
- Light wind shell
- Phone + power bank
- Basic first aid / blister kit
- Tide chart if wreck curiosity is planned
- Change of clothes after beach (optional)
- Cash/card for entry machines & food
2. Decision tree — pick one primary plan
A · Family / mixed mobility → Putty Beach day
Drive-in beach hub, short coastal samples, early exit. Maitland Bay only if stairs are truly OK for the whole
group.
B · First-timer icon beach → Half-day Maitland Bay
Information Centre trackhead → steep descent → beach time → honest climb-out clock. Do not stack a full
one-way Coastal Walk the same afternoon.
C · Fit walkers, one car → Coastal Walk section (out-and-back)
Putty–Maitland is the classic shorter sample. Abort at a named beach if weather or energy fails.
D · Fit walkers + logistics → Full Coastal Walk one-way
Putty ↔ MacMasters (~8–8.5 km one-way planning figure — verify NPWS). Needs car shuffle or pick-up. Not a first
half-day impulse.
E · Overnight → Official camp + one walk
Book Putty / Little / Tallow via NSW National Parks only. Match pack weight to walk-in reality. Entry fees can
be additional.
3. Half-day: Maitland Bay (≈3–5 hrs on the ground)
- Night before — Pack water, grip shoes, sun kit; set “start climbing by” time; check alerts.
- 0:00 — Arrive Scenic Road / Information Centre trackhead. Pay entry if required. Hide valuables.
- 0:15–0:45 — Descend carefully. Keep children close on steps.
- 0:45–2:00+ — Beach time. Swim only if conditions and ability match. Wreck viewing = look, don’t scramble; tide/swell dependent.
- Climb out — Start ascent before anyone is cooked. Rest on the way up.
- Exit — Killcare / MacMasters food buffer + drive margin. Optional short Coastal Walk sample only if energy remains.
4. Family: Putty Beach + short walks
- Arrive early on school holidays and fine Sundays.
- Beach first; optional short Coastal Walk sample with a hard turnaround time.
- Plan B if parking is full: Mount Bouddi / Dingeldei picnic area — do not invent illegal parking.
- Village ice-cream / toilets in Killcare or MacMasters after — skip a second hard track.
5. Coastal Walk sections (planning figures — verify NPWS)
Common section splits
- Putty Beach → Maitland Bay ~3 km
- Maitland Bay → Little Beach ~3.5 km
- Little Beach → MacMasters Beach ~1.7 km
- Full one-way ~8–8.5 km · ~3.5–4.5 hrs walking
Grade commonly cited ~3 / medium. Steps, exposure and uneven surfaces. Confirm live distance, grade and
status on the official track page.
Full one-way rules
- Two cars or a real pick-up — hope is not logistics
- 2 L water capacity in heat
- Reassess at each beach: swim vs remaining distance
- Do not “just add Box Head” after a full one-way
- Turn around if weather or energy fails — still a win
6. Order-of-stops cheat sheet
First-visit priority
- Putty Beach or Maitland Bay (pick one hero)
- Optional short Coastal Walk sample or lookout (Gerrin Point)
- Village reset (Killcare / MacMasters / Terrigal)
Skip if short on time / bad conditions
- Full one-way without shuttle logistics
- Late Maitland climb with tired kids
- Rock-platform wreck scramble in swell
- Box Head + long Coastal Walk + Maitland on first heat day
7. Parking, fees & crowds
- Vehicle day-entry often applies in fee areas (planning figure ~$8/vehicle/day — verify live)
- Weekend: arrive early or accept Plan B (Mount Bouddi picnic)
- Never leave bags visible in cars
- Use signed parking only — no soft-verge improvising
- Putty day-use and Maitland trackhead are peak pressure points
- Maitland Bay stays quieter on the sand because it is walk-in — parking still fills
8. Camping (official only)
- Putty Beach — drive-in, most family-friendly logistics
- Little Beach — more secluded walk-in feel
- Tallow Beach — smaller, more remote character
- Book only via NSW National Parks (or official NPWS phone channel)
- Park entry fees can be additional to camping fees
- Overnight vehicle camping outside designated campgrounds is prohibited
9. Safety non-negotiables
- Unfenced cliffs and lookouts — fall risk; supervise children; stay on formed track
- Steep steps to Maitland Bay — the climb out decides the day
- Slippery rocks, wave action, changing tides on platforms and wreck approaches
- Strong sun and limited shade on heath sections — dehydrate slowly, fail fast without water
- Ocean conditions vary; swimming is not guaranteed safe at every beach
- Mobile coverage can be patchy — screenshot plans offline
- Emergency: call 000. This PDF/HTML cannot help with rescue.
