Family day: Putty Beach + short walks
Best for: Families and mixed mobility groups
Guide updated · verify NSW National Parks the morning you go
Drive-in beach base, short coastal samples, picnic logistics, and an early exit before meltdown o’clock. Maitland Bay only if stairs are truly OK.

Default family plan: Putty Beach first. Upgrade to Maitland Bay only with honest stair capacity and early timing.
Success metrics: everyone still speaking at dinner, no lost shoes in the car-park rush, and at least one real ocean hour.
School holidays and fine Sundays fill parking — arrive early or name Mount Bouddi picnic as Plan B before you leave home.
Timeline
Times are planning anchors, not a race clock. Protect the reverse drive home.
Night before
Pack family logistics
Water for everyone, sun kit, snacks, change of clothes, simple first aid. Agree: primary = Putty Beach. Optional short Coastal Walk sample only. Maitland is a separate decision, not a default.
Morning
Early Putty arrival
Pay entry if required, set a base near toilets/beach access, apply sunscreen before anyone “just looks at the water for a second”.
Midday
Short walk or quiet beach window
Optional short Coastal Walk sample with a timed turnaround. Keep it optional. Lunch in shade or back at the car if heat spikes.
Afternoon
Village reset
Killcare / MacMasters / Avoca for ice cream and toilets. Skip stacking a second hard track. Leave before the group melts.

- Water bottle or bladder 1–2 LLimited taps on headland sections; summer heat still burns with sea breeze
- Lightweight wind shellCliff and headland wind can flip a mild forecast into a cold walk
- Reef-safe sunscreenMarine extension — reduce chemical load if you swim or snorkel
- Quick-dry towelUseful after Putty Beach or Maitland Bay swims when you still have a climb out
- Tide chart / offline mapPS Maitland wreck viewing is tide-dependent; offline map helps when signal drops
- First-aid + blister kitSandstone steps and long coastal days punish hot spots early
- Power bankScreenshot NPWS alerts and return plans; coverage is patchy in pockets of the park
- Insect repellent (seasonal)Bush edges and dawn/dusk beach walks can be buggy after rain
